The sport of Agility consists in a 15 to 25 obstacle
course. The goal is to complete the course in the best
time and to accumulate the least points.
It's very important to develop a very good control of
your dog because the course is run off leash (basic
obedience should be completed before starting Agility).
There are different classes, according to the
the dog's height, and his competition status.
There are also several type of games, and course variations.
The obstacles consist in pipe tunnels, weave poles,
A-frames, dog walks, see-saws, collapsed tunnels, pause
tables, hoop jumps, and various types of jumps.
Many of these obstacles represent the kind of hurdles
wild dogs encounter in nature; narrow bridges, unstable
rocks, caves, logs, etc. Therefore, it is not an activity for
couch potato type dogs.
A dog must have great physical and mental abilities to be able
to complete his championship. Courage, heart, stamina, audacity,
vitality, determination, eagerness to please, are just a few
of the qualities required to perform well in Agility.
Don't you recognize our wonderful Pit Bulls and AmStaffs?
However, people must be aware that an Agility course is run
off leash and even if it is usually set in a fenced field,
there can be a lot of dogs nearby. If you can't control your
Pitbull around other dogs, a more individual sport, like
frisbee for example, may be best for you and your dog .
Agility is an excellent way to practice advanced obedience while
having fun and exercising. And this goes for both the dog AND the
handler ;-)
Dogs will learn hand signals, vocal commands, off leash work etc.
They quickly understand to focus on you and the commands you give
them in order to follow the direction you are leading them to.
It is also remarkable how it helps boosting the confidence of
overly sensitive or shy dogs when done properly. It can also
help stabilize excessively dominant or submissive dogs.
Most of all, dogs LOVE it!!!!
And what a great way to keep them happy, healthy and in great physical
shape.
